Tame
by
The Pixies
Tame is extremely boring and short. There are three nearly identical chordal sections separated by long pauses. The most interesting thing about this song on guitar is the squeezing, which allows a slightly higher score if you can pull it off.

The best thing about this song is listening to the other parts. 1/5.

...And Justice for All
by
Metallica
"...And Justice for All" is an incredibly difficult song. The beginning is a slow entre-acte, much like we've come to expect from Metallica, but it soon comes crashing to a difficult progression of chords. The choruses contain two very difficult, fast chordal progressions, as well as an awesomely fun set of fast notes (which you get to play twice in a row if you are lucky)!

The solo is the easiest out of the Metallica pack, which is not saying much. While the first 40% or so is similar to what you play during the choruses, it does get changed up a little bit with some new fast finger work. The end portion of the solo is a blitz of fast strumming (like the Highway Star solo). Eventually it crashes into finger tapping instead of fast strumming, and then you are home free.

"...And Justice for All" was the bane of my existence for almost 5 months, because it is so tough to gold star. You will need to hit almost everything outside of the solo with a perfect path, and hit at least 95% of the solo. This song is very repetitive, but there are parts that are a lot of fun. It is among the most difficult songs to gold star, so if you are looking for a challenge this is a must own.

Shhh....
by
Darkest of the Hillside Thickets
"Shhh..." is the best guitar song out of the PAX Collection. The guitar part is mostly chords, and while they are in a repetitive pattern the fast-paced dark sound and quick chord changes make it worth the $1.00 price of admission.

Skullcrusher Mountain
by
Jonathan Coulton
Jonathan Coulton, the evil mastermind behind GLaDOS' "Still Alive," now brings you a love song with a twist. Skullcrusher Mountain is very similar to Still Alive. Both have a lot of acoustic guitar that mixes fingerpicking with chords. In the case of Skullcrusher Mountain, you get a mildly fun song with original lyrics. There's nothing new here, but it is a good buy at $1.00.

Livin' on the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe
by
MC Frontalot
I happen to really like LOTCODAC, but the guitar part is pretty boring. This song is a nerdcore rap, and the guitar seems very "sampled." It is shamelessly repetitive, and it gets old rather quickly. The only positive is that you get to sit back and listen to MC Frontalot lay rhymes better than Jay Z.

Runnin' Wild
by
Airbourne
Runnin' Wild is the simplest track released in the Roadrunner pack, but it's definitely a lot of fun to play. Nothing in this song is too difficult, but the song has a nice clean sound reminiscent of ACDC. Although the track is fairly simple, it's a lot of fun in band and is a perfect fit for the Rock Band catalog. I am definitely hoping to see more DLC from Airbourne in the future.

Verdict: Simple but fun.

Zero
by
Smashing Pumpkins
The Smashing Pumpkins are one of my least favorite bands of all time, mainly because of their whiny singer; however, this song really impressed me. The chorus and verses feel like you are plodding along a little bit, and they are somewhat repetitive, but the solo is unique and you get a bit of fast strumming afterwards.

This is definitely an above average chart, but it's not a must own. If you are a Pumpkins fan, then you will definitely enjoy it. If you aren't particularly enthused with them, you might be pleasantly surprised by this track. It's not going to pose anyone a challenge, but it's more fun that Siva or Cherub Rock.

Constant Motion
by
Dream Theater
Constant Motion is by far one of the best downloadable releases for Rock Band. Immediately after the intro you are dumped into a set of fast chordal switches combined with some thrashy triplets in between. It's tough to hold a combo through, but anyone who sees you pulling it off will surely be amazed. After a small bridge you come to the chorus: a wall of chords that are not difficult to hit but have a very unique sound to them. The song then dumps you back into the thrashy chords from the beginning, but afterwards there is a change of pace. There is a variation on the triplet/chordal scheme, and then a section of very difficult HO/PO's that I still haven't been able to get through cleanly.

Soon thereafter, you hit the solo. My highest solo attempt so far has been 72%, and I would recommend having at least half of your overdrive bar full before hitting it (there are two more phrases available before the solo goes nuts). When the solo does go nuts, you'll be blown away. I'll be extremely impressed if anyone ever FC's this. This solo's difficulty is right up there with Afterlife and Blackened.

All in all, this is one of the best guitar songs released to date. Any expert looking for a challenge must own this song.

Hitch a Ride
by
Boston
Hitch a Ride is pretty boring through the first solo, but it still sounds really gorgeous. The guitar part is not difficult, and the chords feel very similar to other songs in the Boston pack. The first solo is not that difficult, but the second solo makes this song a surprising challenge! It's definitely one of the hidden gems in the Boston pack.

Peace of Mind
by
Boston
This song opens with a fun section reminiscent of the acoustic section of Foreplay/Longtime. The main riff has a great sound, and the chordal progression is fairly unique. My only gripe with the song is that it does not seem to want to end... ... ...

Rock and Roll Band
by
Boston
This is the weakest song from the Boston pack. The chart starts off with a chordal progression that soon brings you into a ridiculously fast trill. The solo is mildly difficult and pretty fun, but the trill at the beginning sealed this songs fate for me.

More Than a Feeling
by
Boston
More Than a Feeling is a great song, but the guitar chart is just not that interesting. The strumming at the beginning is fun, and the chords during the chorus are good, but it is a pretty standard chart. This is probably the most famous song from the Boston pack, so I would assume a lot of people will rush for this one, but your tastes may be better served by some of the hidden gems from the pack.

Something About You
by
Boston
This song starts out pretty standard, but by the time you hit the solo you are already eating it up. The solo is really good, but afterwards the guitar lights up and begins to shred. The post-solo wankery makes this song one of the best charts from the Boston pack.

Thrasher
by
Evile
Watch a video of this song before purchasing it, because the speed of that strumming does not work well with Rock Band's timing window. I've played the song several times now, and I have yet to find one redeeming quality. It is essentially a grueling, non-musical case study in frustration.

Afterlife
by
Avenged Sevenfold
I was pleasantly surprised by Afterlife because the guitar part features an interesting mix of very fast HOPO's in parts and a solid, normal, chordal section. The solo, however, kills. While there are other parts of the song that are challenging, the solo is ridiculous. I don't believe that it is over charted, per se, but it's far too hard to make this a really good buy for most expert guitarists. Without being able to play the solo (I seem to have topped out at about 70%), the song is diminished to parts that feel familiar to other much easier and much more fun songs.

Saints of Los Angeles
by
Motley Crue
New Motley Crue material can sometimes be painful to those who are familiar with their older material, but this song is an absolute gem. The guitar riff at the beginning is a fast set of HOPO's and the verses are a nice bit of fast strumming with some chords thrown in. The solo features a screeching guitar, and the bridge coming out of the solo has some more fun HOPO's. There's a bit of ridiculous fast strumming towards the end, but overall the song is really solid.

Hier Kommt Alex
by
Die Toten Hosen
I prefer the Guitar Hero III chart of this song, possibly because the timing window in Rock Band makes this song a little bit too hard to full combo. This chart just seems simple in comparison, and I miss the three note chords that guitar hero offered. The song is still good on guitar, but if you have Guitar Hero III you should probably pass on it.

My Sharona
by
The Knack
My Sharona is a blemish on the face of music history, and I never want it to stop. The main riff is awfully boring, and the first solo does not pose a challenge, but the second solo is an intensely fast combination of various skills. If you can stay awake long enough to get to the second solo, you'll definitely enjoy the song. In my opinion the chart is really well put tabbed, but the guitar part is a little too repetitive to warrant a higher rating.

Smokin'
by
Boston
Blisteringly fast, this song is a must have from the Boston track pack. The main riff is a combination of precise strumming, chords, and HOPO's. The organ solos are tabbed out for the guitar, and they are very tough. The trills from the organ are extremely difficult to hit, making this a particularly tough song to gold star on guitar. If you are looking for a challenge, or simply a fun, fast song that is sure to impress, this is definitely a good buy. In my opinion, this is one of the must have songs from the Boston track pack.

The Number of the Beast
by
Iron Maiden
Expert guitarists coming from Guitar Hero III will recognize this song as one of the most difficult around; however, this "cover" version's guitar sounds nothing like the original master recording. Compared to other songs in Rock Band the chart is somewhat difficult, but it is significantly easier than the GH III chart. The fact that the cover guitarist sounds like he's playing through a tube amp without any mods on should scare away anyone who is a fan of the original song.

Moving to Seattle
by
The Material
The only really present surprise out of the MTV2 Pack, Moving to Seattle is just fun to play. I FC'd it on a sight read, but that doesn't mean I won't go back to it. There is a lot of chordal strumming throughout, but nothing that is going to pose to large a challenge. If you are looking for a decent song with a female vocalist, definitely check this out.

Hysteria
by
Muse
While the bassist is going to take home most of the accolades on this song, the guitar part is no walk in the park. The intro guitar part is fun, and the choruses are good; however, the real fun is when the guitar mimics the bass part. It is one of the most challenging and impressive HO/PO parts in the game. Any expert guitarists who can get over their ego should also check out the bass part, as the real challenge here is trying to FC the HO/PO's which run through almost the entire song. This song is a must own.

Shockwave
by
Black Tide
This is one of the best DLC surprises so far. Not many people have heard of Black Tide, a thrash metal band hailing from Miami, but I have a feeling we will be hearing more from them very soon. The guitar parts are awesome. The choruses are charted beautifully and are a thrill to play. Solo 1 is difficult, while Solo 2 is insane. Overall, this song is a blast, and is a must own for any expert guitarist.
