You guys all remember the new Rock Band Network that let’s anyone with master tracks (and rights) bring their music to Rock Band right? Well it seems like the first major effort to take advantage of the program will be Seattle indie label, and forerunner of the grunge movement, Sub Pop.
From Joystiq:
Riding on the coattails of last Friday’s Rock Band Network reveal, indie label Sub Pop is the first record company to officially pledge its support for the new DLC initiative. Rolling Stone spoke with Sub Pop A&R exec Tony Kiewel, who said, “This conceivably could be the opening of the floodgates.” Sub Pop intends to convert its “entire catalog” — which includes Sonic Youth, early Nirvana, and The Postal Service — to playable tracks.
Additionally, Kiewel notes that future artists’ releases on his label will automatically get the Rock Band treatment. “This’ll be another format alongside vinyl and CD.” The only difference between buying the newest Shins album from the Rock Band Network versus at the record store? The disdainful look from the Paramore t-shirt-clad cashier on your way out of the record store.
First let me say this is awesome and hopefully we’ll get more announcements like this. The last few months or so I’ve kind of gotten tired of the week-by-week DLC and really I think now I’m leaning toward one final HUGE Rock Band 3 and then a more iTunes-like service with entire label catalogs.
Now for some artist with Sub Pop:
- Nirvana
- Sonic Youth
- The Postal Service
- Flight of the Conchords
- Cansei de Ser Sexy (FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
- Iron & Wine
- L7
- Handsome Furs
- Death Cab for Cutie
- Hole
- Dinosaur Jr.
- Hot Hot Heat
- Low
- Reverend Horton Heat (YES!!!!!!!!)
- Tristessa by Smashing Pumpkins
- Rogue Wave
- Sleater-Kinney
- Soundgarden
- The Go! Team (YES!!!!!!!)
- I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times by The Beach Boys
- The Walkabouts
- The White Stripes
- Turbonegro
- The Shins
Now it should be noted not all of these bands have all their stakes in Sub Pop. For example if you want to download Elephant or Icky Thump by The White Stripes you’re outta luck since those albums weren’t under the Sub Pop label. However some of the newer foreign bands like Cansei de Ser Sexy, The Go! Team, and Flight of the Conchords have yet to jump the Sub Pop label. So before jumping to conclusions (as I already have) you might wanna make sure the part of that band’s career you like is even under Sub Pop to begin with.

P.S. Please Modular Recordings do the same. We need more dance-y music!

harmonix might become the new apple if they can make rock band the next music store.
CANSEI DE SER SEXY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT
I CANT WAIT
OMFG (does happy dance)
I will be getting all Postal Service, Shins, and DCfC at the very least. May not be the best songs for Rock Band charts, but I love them…
Oh, yeah. Oops. I guess they just kind of merged into one, Ben Gibbard-shaped blob in my head. Apologies for that.
