Trying out something a bit different to add a bit more to the site, here is the first week of DLC review! Keep it in mind that I haven’t actually played any of these songs as I’m reviewing them, I’m just giving my two cents about how they look. I also won’t be telling my thoughts about vocals. I’ll be providing links to videos of the songs, so click on those to see what you think. With that out of the way, let’s get started…
Fijate Bien – Juanes: Accordion guitar! Yes, there are parts of this song where the accordion part is charted to the guitar. Speaking of which, guitar looks like this song’s main strong point. There’s a bit of downtime during the verses, but the chorus has some good parts that move around a bit. The song also has two guitar solos. Drums for this song are a bit unique and have some fun looking fills, but it just seems very repetetive. The bass is simple, moves around a bit, but overall seems a bit dull. Guitarists should take a look at this one.
Gotas de Agua Dulce – Juanes: Guitar has a bit of variety with chordy parts and lead guitar parts. Drums are a bit basic but entertaining and pick up in the latter half of the song. Bass looks decent, although nothing incredibly special. This whole song just screams “meh” to me, but some people would probably find it fun for something.
La Camisa Negra - Juanes: Super catchy song, and also looks super fun to play. Not the hardest guitar part, but has enough variety to keep you interested. Drums have tons of variety as well, a lot of cool fills and different beats. Bass also looks interesting, a lot of moving around. I’d suggest checking this one out!
A Dios le Pido – Juanes:The guitar chart for this song just looked a bit awkward to me. Lots of weird chord changes and fast notes. However, this song has a drum solo to make up for that! A very weird, somewhat awkward looking drum solo. Outside of the drum solo the drums are a bit dull. The bass is definately not something to rave about either. I’d suggest skipping unless you’re some kind of “drum solo” collector.
Mala Gente – Juanes: This one doesn’t seem very appealing. There are two guitar solos, both of which look like a blast. But outisde of those, the guitar is really simple and slow. The drums are also very basic, as is the bass. I’d say only check this out if you’re a guitarist, but overall this is probably a skip.
Yerbatero - Juanes: This looks to me to be by far the best Juanes song for drums. It has a bongo solo! There are also lots of interesting beats and fills scattered through the song. Guitar on this song also looks fantastic. Bass moves around a lot, although it’s still nothing to be excited for. I’d definately say you should buy this is you’re a drummer, or a guitarist as well.
Scream - Avenged Sevenfold These are the songs that people are excited for this week. Although I’m not a fan of this band at all, I’ll keep my bias out of these reviews. Scream might be the most challening song on drums this week. It has a high-hat disco type beat in the verses with lots of fast bass hits. There’s a lot going on as far as drums go. Guitar is full of alt strumming and chords, up until you’re hit by an intense solo with plenty of fast scales/arpeggios. Bass has it’s fun parts, but there are plenty of spots where you’re just playing eight notes on a single note. Drummers should check this song out, guitarists and bassists should probably consider it (The guitar really isn’t anything special outside the solo). Although, if you love this band you’re bound to buy the whole pack anyway.
Nightmare - Avenged Sevenfold The magic of Mike Portnoy in Rock Band again! (Although, The Rev wrote the drum part. Portnoy just plays the part The Rev wrote). Anyways, the drum part for this song is a bit of a mix between Afterlife and Critical Acclaim. It’s a bit hard to tell you exactly what’s going on, but the song looks super fun on drums. The guitar is a bit chordy up to the solo, which has a bit of tremolo picking in it. Bass is nothing special, just follows the guitar most of the song. Reccomened to drummers and guitarists.
Seize the Day - Avenged Sevenfold The “ballad” of the pack. The drums are slow, yet interesting enough to enjoy if you love the song. The pace picks up later in the song, also. The guitar is full of chords up until a nice guitar solo, which seems to be the pattern for Avenged Sevenfold songs. However, there’s a second solo that comes and hits you with some ridiculously fast trills. And then a THIRD Solo comes at the very end and hits you with more fast trills. Bass just usually plays root notes. I’d say only buy this is you’re a big fan of the song, anybody else can probably just skip out on it.
Overall, I’d say this week looks great. Tons of variety and some really catchy fun songs. Drummers should definately pick up Scream and Nightmare, La Camisa Negra, and Yerbatero. Guitarists should look at Scream, Nightmare, and most of the Juanes songs. Tell me what you guys think in the comments, and also tell me if you’d like me to do these every week. I realize I’m not the best reviewer and my opinion is just based on watching videos of the songs, but I enjoy giving you guys more to talk about.
